Russell converts pole into victory in Baku, while Max Verstappen finishes second and championship leader Kimi Antonelli fights back from 16th to fifth.
Formula 1 delivered another dramatic race around the streets of Baku on Saturday, with George Russell taking victory in an incident-filled 2026 Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
The Mercedes driver started from pole and controlled the race from the front, despite two Safety Car periods bringing Max Verstappen back into contention. Russell eventually held off the Red Bull to claim his third victory of the 2026 season.
For Russell, it was a particularly important result in the championship fight. His victory cuts Kimi Antonelli's championship advantage from 81 points to 66 points.

Russell dominates qualifying
Russell's weekend got off to the perfect start on Friday when he secured pole position with an impressive lap of 1:42.526.
He was joined on the front row by Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, with Oscar Piastri starting third for McLaren. Isack Hadjar put in an impressive performance to qualify fourth, while Lando Norris completed the top five.
But the biggest story from qualifying was championship leader Kimi Antonelli.
The Mercedes youngster crashed at Turn 1 during Q1, damaging his car and ending his qualifying session. As a result, Antonelli was forced to start the race from 16th on the grid.
That immediately turned what had looked like another opportunity for Antonelli to extend his championship lead into a major recovery challenge.
A difficult start for Antonelli
Starting 16th around Baku was always going to make life difficult.
The narrow sections of the Baku City Circuit make overtaking complicated in places, while the long main straight can create opportunities for drivers to attack.
Antonelli nevertheless produced an impressive recovery drive.
The championship leader worked his way through the field and eventually finished fifth, limiting the damage from what could have been a disastrous weekend.
Considering he had started 16th, fifth place represented a strong recovery — but Russell's victory means the championship battle has become slightly closer.
Verstappen pushes Russell
Max Verstappen started eighth after a difficult qualifying session but quickly moved himself into contention.
Red Bull's pace improved throughout the weekend, and Verstappen was eventually able to challenge Russell for the victory.
Two Safety Car periods played an important role in the race. Each one reduced Russell's advantage and gave Verstappen another opportunity to attack.
However, Russell remained composed under pressure.
Despite Verstappen closing the gap towards the end of the race, the Mercedes driver managed to stay ahead and crossed the line to claim victory.
It was another reminder of just how competitive the 2026 championship has become.
Baku produces another chaotic race
The Azerbaijan Grand Prix has developed a reputation for producing unpredictable races, and the 2026 edition was no different.
The combination of Baku's extremely long straight, tight corners and unforgiving walls can create opportunities for mistakes at almost every stage of the race.
This year's race featured two Safety Car periods, while several drivers were involved in incidents.
The unpredictable nature of the race meant that the final result looked very different from the starting grid.
Russell started first and finished first.
Antonelli started 16th and finished fifth.
And Verstappen, who started eighth, managed to fight his way onto the podium.
What about Lando Norris?
It was another frustrating weekend for Lando Norris.
The McLaren driver qualified fifth but was involved in one of the race's incidents and failed to finish, alongside Pierre Gasly, after Franco Colapinto's Alpine was involved in a collision.
That result is particularly significant given Norris' championship ambitions.
After narrowly missing out on victory in Madrid, where a late Virtual Safety Car period dramatically changed the race, Norris would have been hoping for a stronger result in Baku.
Instead, he leaves Azerbaijan without adding to his points tally.
A weekend to forget for Antonelli — but not a disaster
It would be easy to look at Antonelli's qualifying crash and assume the weekend was a disaster for the championship leader.
However, finishing fifth from 16th means he still managed to score valuable points.
Before the weekend, Antonelli had an 81-point advantage over Russell. After Russell's victory and Antonelli's fifth place, that lead has been reduced to 66 points.
That's still a substantial advantage, but Russell has shown that the championship fight isn't over.
With three consecutive race weekends coming up, there are plenty more points available.
What does this mean for the championship?
Russell's victory could prove important as the season enters its next phase.
Mercedes continues to have both cars fighting at the front, while Verstappen and Red Bull remain capable of challenging for victories.
Antonelli still leads the championship, but Russell has now taken another step towards closing the gap.
And with the next races coming in quick succession, the championship could change again very quickly.
Final thoughts
The 2026 Azerbaijan Grand Prix had almost everything you'd expect from a race in Baku: a dramatic qualifying session, Safety Cars, incidents, a championship fight and a tense battle for victory.
George Russell was ultimately the star of the weekend.
After starting from pole, he kept his composure through two Safety Car periods and resisted pressure from Verstappen to secure his third win of the season.
But perhaps the biggest takeaway is that the championship battle is far from finished.
Antonelli remains in control, but Russell has reduced the gap.
And with the season entering its next stage, the question is no longer simply whether Antonelli can win the championship — it's whether Russell can keep taking points out of him.
